RoomTheatre

Friday 22 October 2021, at 8:00 pm

Imagine being part of a group and being accompanied through an experiential pathway. Imagine poetry, photography, theatre, painting and sculpture which come alive in the rooms of an 18th century villa, and imagine that behind every door, lies a glimpse of a world.

Think of a voyage, traveling through locations and traveling through art, which brings you to places where you’ve never been before.

Think of being so immersed in the scene around you, taking in every new sensation, that you feel you are living the experience. Think of actions, sounds, noises, and images capable of drawing you in.

RoomTheatre would like to be your itinerant performance, your sensory voyage.

Artistic concept

“The performance, thanks to the absence of a stage, extends into the theatre, beginning from the floor, running up the surrounding walls by pathways, physically surrounding the spectator, creating an uninterrupted atmosphere of lights, of images, and of sounds.”
Antonin Artaud

The destruction of the theatrical place, that is to say the breaking of the line which separates the audience from the stage, has long-standing roots. It was in the 1950s that Judith Malina and Julian Beck, founders of the Living Theatre, presented their first performance in their apartment. In the 1960s, Jerzy Grotowski developed the concept of a theatre capable of freeing itself of everything, apart from actors and spectators, focusing his attempts on the communion between the two. His work continues to inspire many European avant-garde theatre companies which bring theatrical performances away from the theatre and distant from the usual theatrical locations, and into the streets, the piazzas, hospitals and courtyards.

RoomTheatre draws on this legacy and aims to be an immersive experience, a participatory event. The spectator is accompanied on a journey of which he is a constant and active part.

The wish is to guide every participant to the heart of the creative space, to be immersed in the rooms of our house, passing through the ateliers of the artists in residence, through the stairways, the corridors and the most remote and hidden angles, with the intent to have this artistic event take place where it would be difficult to imagine and where it usually never would be expected.

In collaboration with the students and professors of the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, together with a rich cast of artists, the production is staged with evocative and suggestive forms, reverberating within the spectator the feeling of traveling new pathways.

The connecting thread is, in fact, the theme of voyage, wanting to remind us of the intrinsic force of the theatre, of its capacity to always transport us somewhere else. What happens when, on an average evening, in a place just a few kilometers from home, we find ourselves now in Spain, now in South America, now in Milano, now in Paris.

The participants will come in contact with diverse art forms: the actor’s art, installations, poetry, painting, photography, sculpture. An excellent dinner will complete the evening’s program.

Stimulated by questions, reflections, sensations, every participant will be the protagonist of an experience which will involve all the senses.
